Research Opportunities Abroad from India in Theoretical Physics
A stage-by-stage reference to research programmes, PhD and postdoctoral routes, visiting fellowships, travel support, eligibility language, funding, applications, and physics job portals.

Research opportunities in theoretical physics do not form one ladder. A summer project, scientific school, doctoral studentship, postdoctoral job, individual fellowship and faculty research visit are different academic and legal arrangements. They select at different career stages and require different evidence.
This chapter maps routes for researchers based in India across quantum physics, mathematical physics, high-energy theory, gravitation and quantum information. Programme rules, countries, subject lists, financial terms and calls can change; the current call and applicantâs circumstances control eligibility.
1. Read an opportunity at the correct level
Official websites commonly contain four kinds of information:

The distinction matters. âCERN programme,â for example, could mean a summer studentship, doctoral studentship, research fellowship or staff vacancy. Each has different rules. âDAAD scholarshipâ refers to a large family of schemes rather than one award. A listing on EURAXESS may be a salaried job, a fellowship-hosting offer or a funding opportunity.
A reliable reading identifies the exact scheme; checks whether the page is a live call, archive or general description; tests career stage, subject, nationality, residence and mobility eligibility; determines whether a host or nomination is required; and separates funded components from the participantâs responsibilities.
2. A stage map from India
The following map shows the main types of route. The examples are examined in later sections.

An applicant should not use prestige as the first filter. The first filter is structural fit. A strong MSc student is not eligible for a postdoctoral fellowship; a recently graduated student may be ineligible for a summer programme requiring continued enrolment; and a faculty member seeking a two-month visit should not apply to a scheme designed to recruit a full-time postdoc.
3. Indian undergraduate and MSc research routes
Science Academies Summer Research Fellowship
The Indian Academy of Sciences, Indian National Science Academy and National Academy of Sciences, India jointly operate the Science Academies Summer Research Fellowship Programme. Its annual call has ordinarily offered students and teachers studying or teaching in India a two-month project with a guide associated with one of the academies. The call identifies the available guides and requires an application and teacher recommendation. The published terms for the cycle also describe round-trip train fare and a monthly fellowship.
For a theoretical-physics applicant, the guide list is decisive. A statement should connect existing preparation to plausible guides in the subjects actually represented that year. Concrete conceptual overlap is stronger than a list of fashionable topics.
This is an annual competitive call. Guide availability, subjects, application fields and dates must be read afresh. The Academiesâ broader Science Education Panel also provides routes to refresher courses and lecture workshops, which are educational activities rather than research appointments.
TIFR visiting-student programmes are unit-specific
âTIFR VSRPâ should not be treated as one uniform central opportunity. TIFR centres and subject units publish their own calls, eligibility conditions and project areas. Two official examples show why the unit page matters:
- The NCRA-TIFR Visiting Studentsâ Research Programme is an annual summer research programme in astronomy and astrophysics, including theoretical, observational and computational work. Its selection materials emphasise the statement of research interests, academic record, references and motivation beyond coursework. Stipend and accommodation are described by the active call. It is a good fit only when the applicantâs interests genuinely meet astronomy, astrophysics or the listed technical areas.
- The TIFR School of Mathematics VSRP is aimed at eligible bachelorâs and masterâs students for advanced reading or projects in mathematics. Its level, academic prerequisites, interest statement and referee requirements differ from the NCRA programme.
Other TIFR units may advertise other programmes. Use the relevant unitâs current page rather than an old poster. Participation may strengthen a later application, but it does not guarantee PhD admission unless the call explicitly creates that route.
ICTS long-term visiting students
The ICTS Long Term Visiting Students Program is structurally different from a short summer school. The published call has invited eligible bachelorâs, integrated-masterâs and masterâs students near the end of their degree, including Indian and foreign students, to spend one or two semesters working closely with ICTS faculty. Applications include academic information, a CV and referees; the advertised cycle states stipend and accommodation support.
Research areas vary with the call and faculty availability. The longer duration makes mathematical maturity, sustained availability and a plausible faculty match especially important.
ICTS also hosts research and training programmes. The programme-proposal page and programme guidelines explain the institutional structure for organisers, while each approved programme has its own participant call and support terms. Attendance at a programme is not the same status as being an ICTS student, postdoc or employee.
4. International undergraduate and masterâs-level programmes
CERN Summer Studentship
The CERN Summer Studentship is designed for bachelorâs or masterâs students, not PhD candidates, in physics, engineering, computer science or mathematics. The official programme page specifies completion of a minimum amount of full-time university study, continued student status, English proficiency, and limits on previous CERN participation. It requests a CV, official transcript and academic reference and describes a scientific or technical project, lectures, subsistence support, health-insurance coverage, possible travel support and accommodation assistance.
India is listed by CERN as an Associate Member State, but nationality rules still have to be read on the exact programme page. Membership status is decisive for some CERN routes and not expressed identically for every route. Scientifically, CERN is a natural match for high-energy physics, accelerators, detector theory, scientific computing and connected mathematical work. âQuantum physicsâ alone is too broad to establish a project match.
DESY Summer Student Programme
The DESY Summer Student Programme gives eligible university students research experience in areas such as particle and astroparticle physics, photon science, accelerators, theory and scientific computing. Its conditions page requires substantial completed university study, continued enrolment throughout the programme, English and computing preparation; students who already hold, or will hold, a masterâs degree by the specified point are excluded under the current structure.
The programme describes a fixed full-time period, project work and lectures, subsistence payment, hostel accommodation and partial travel reimbursement. The DESY FAQ makes health insurance mandatory and explains that a visa invitation follows selection. âFundedâ therefore does not remove pre-arrival, insurance or visa responsibilities.
Perimeter Institute undergraduate programmes
Perimeter Instituteâs Undergraduate Summer Programs combine a short theoretical-physics school with a separately selective paid research-internship route. The annual page specifies the expected quantum- and classical-mechanics background and the intended graduate-study horizon. For the advertised cycle, the school carried no fee and provided travel, accommodation and food for selected participants; applicants to the school could also seek a longer PSI Start research internship.
This is a clear subject fit for fundamental theory, but prerequisites are cycle-specific. School and internship selection are distinct outcomes and should be described accurately.
5. Doctoral routes and hiring models
International PhD opportunities use several models. In programme admission, the student joins a graduate school and may choose a supervisor later. A project studentship is tied to a grant, supervisor and topic. An employee PhD combines employment and degree registration. In a scholarship PhD, funding can be separate from admission. Sandwich mobility keeps registration at the home university while adding defined periods with a co-supervisor elsewhere.
An advertisement must be read for both academic admission and funding. âAdmittedâ does not always mean âfunded,â and âselected for a scholarshipâ does not automatically create university admission.
CERN Doctoral Studentship
The CERN Doctoral Studentship is for a person who has started or is about to start a doctorate at a university. The university must agree that work conducted at CERN contributes to the thesis. The current programme requires nationality of a CERN Member or Associate Member State, so Indian nationality fits that criterion while India retains the status shown on CERNâs official member-state page. The candidate still needs a CERN-relevant field, university support and all current vacancy conditions.
This is not a route for independently enrolling at âCERN Universityâ; the degree remains connected to a university. It is also not automatically ideal for every theoretical project. The active fields of work and advertised positions determine scientific fit.
ICTP-IAEA STEP
The ICTP-IAEA Sandwich Training Educational Programme supports eligible PhD students from developing countries in physics, mathematics and related fields while they remain enrolled at their home universities. Its structure provides recurring research periods at ICTP or a collaborating institute, with a home supervisor and host co-advisor. The application involves the candidate and home supervisor; the official page also describes IAEA-member-state endorsement and asks for research plans, English evidence and supervisory material.
STEP is therefore neither a complete PhD abroad nor a short conference grant. Its purpose is to enrich an existing doctorate through co-supervision and mobility. A scholar who has not yet joined a PhD programme should first distinguish doctoral admission from this later sandwich opportunity.
DAAD doctoral funding
DAAD is best approached through its official Scholarship Database. The database can be filtered by country of origin, academic status, subject and purpose. Routes may include a full doctoral programme in Germany, a bi-nationally supervised doctorate or a shorter research grant. Some programmes require a German supervisor, structured-programme admission, a research plan or both.
DAAD updates conditions by cycle. âDAAD-fundedâ does not identify the scheme or legal relationship; record the exact entry, application authority, host type, language evidence, duration, insurance and travel terms.
6. Postdoctoral positions: job, institute fellowship and personal fellowship
The word postdoc describes a career stage, not one mechanism. An advertised job is funded by an institution or principal investigator, usually for a defined contract or project. An institute fellowship may allow broader topic choice. A personal or mobility fellowship is developed with a proposed host. A job application demonstrates immediate project fit; a candidate-led fellowship must also justify the move, host, training and career development.
The ICTS postdoctoral-fellowship page illustrates an institute route. Its current structure asks for a CV, publication list, short research proposal, cover letter and referees and describes an initial appointment with review-dependent extension, research facilities, housing or allowance and institutional support. The exact research areas and current terms must be checked at application.
Humboldt Research Fellowship
The Humboldt Research Fellowship supports postdoctoral and experienced researchers of all nationalities and research areas for work with a host in Germany. The current page gives postdocs 6â24 months and experienced researchers 6â18 months, within its respective doctorate-age and profile rules, and requires a self-developed project, host statement and confirmation of facilities, expert reviews and evidence of research quality. The hostâs statement is not a substitute for the independent reviews.
This is a host-dependent fellowship requiring serious joint proposal development. The Foundation changes call limits and details; an old description of ârolling applicationsâ cannot replace the active call.
Marie SkĹodowska-Curie Actions Postdoctoral Fellowships
The European Commissionâs MSCA Postdoctoral Fellowships are candidate-and-host proposals. European Postdoctoral Fellowships allow researchers of any nationality to move to an eligible European host for the stated duration. Global Postdoctoral Fellowships have a different nationality or long-term-residence rule and include an outgoing phase and mandatory European return phase.
Eligibility includes a PhD or successful defence, no more than eight yearsâ research experience under its counting rules, and a mobility rule limiting residence or main activity in the destination to 12 of the 36 months before the deadline. Funding goes to the beneficiary organisation and includes researcher allowances plus research, training, networking, management and indirect-cost contributions.
Newton International Fellowship
The Newton International Fellowship supports eligible non-UK early-career researchers based outside the United Kingdom to develop an independent research career with a UK sponsor. Physics falls within the Royal Societyâs natural-sciences remit. The current two-year scheme permits no more than five yearsâ active post-PhD experience, requires a UK academic sponsor and funds salary and research-related institutional costs, with stated provisions for relocation and visa costs.
The sponsor co-develops the proposal and is subject to current-round restrictions. A UK contact is not sponsor agreement; the academic must accept the formal role.
JSPS Postdoctoral Fellowship for Research in Japan
The JSPS Postdoctoral Fellowship (Standard) supports collaborative research by an eligible overseas researcher with a host at an approved Japanese institution. The programme uses two channels: applications initiated through Japanese host institutions and nominations through authorised overseas bodies. The current standard route is 12â24 months and generally requires a PhD obtained within six years of the fellowshipâs start.
The page lists maintenance, airfare, settling-in support, insurance and a possible host-administered research grant. In the open-call channel the Japanese host is the formal applicant; personal email cannot replace host-side submission.
7. Research visits, associateships and faculty mobility
ICTP Associates and research programmes
The ICTP Associates Programme enables PhD-holding scientists working in developing countries to maintain long-term contact with ICTP while strengthening science at home. The call defines junior, regular and senior categories and category-specific visit, travel and living-support structures.
This is not permanent employment or an automatic sabbatical. âAssociateâ is a formal award; the scientist remains active in the home country.
ICTPâs Scientific Calendar lists schools, workshops and other activities. Each event has its own participation and financial-support fields. Applying for participation and applying for financial support may be separate choices, and support is never inferred merely from acceptance.
ICTPâs TRIL Programme offers eligible scientists from developing countries placements in participating Italian laboratories. It requires at least a masterâs degree, residence in a developing country, English and research fit. Selection depends on merit, laboratory interest and funding; some placements are fully funded while others may involve host or home-source contributions.
DAAD Research Stays
DAADâs Research Stays for University Academics and Scientists, found in the DAAD funding database, supports eligible established academics at a home-country university or institute for a short stay with a German host. It is not conference funding and requires the current entryâs research-plan, host, country and repeat-funding conditions.
Fulbright-Nehru Academic and Professional Excellence
The Fulbright-Nehru Academic and Professional Excellence Fellowship enables eligible Indian faculty, researchers and professionals to teach, research, or combine both at a US host. The active page defines experience, employer support, publication and affiliation requirements and benefits including J-1 sponsorship, stipend, travel and specified allowances.
This fellowship is a particularly important example of annual field eligibility. USIEFâs listed priority or eligible fields can change between competitions. A theoretical physicist should not assume that âscienceâ or an earlier yearâs mathematical-sciences category makes a quantum-physics proposal eligible in the current round. Read the live field list and, when the fit is uncertain, obtain written clarification from the programme contact before investing in a full application.
The USIEF postdoctoral route is likewise cycle-specific. Its Fulbright-Nehru Postdoctoral Research Fellowship may restrict eligible fields in a given competition; it is not a permanent all-disciplines alternative to an advertised physics postdoc.
8. Eligibility vocabulary that changes outcomes
Eligibility sentences are technical conditions. Similar-looking words are not interchangeable.

Discipline labels are equally technical. High-energy theory, quantum information, mathematical physics, quantum optics and condensed-matter theory may fall under different panels. CERN and DESY do not represent all quantum physics; Perimeterâs fundamental-theory focus does not mean every yearly project is available; and a broad all-disciplines fellowship still requires a host with appropriate expertise.
9. The application dossier
A reusable dossier saves time, but every document must be adapted to the exact call.
Academic CV
An academic CV includes dated education and appointments, research areas, publications and preprints with accurate status, talks, software or data, teaching, awards and service. Separate peer-reviewed papers from submitted manuscripts and preprints; never merge âaccepted,â âsubmittedâ and âin preparation.â
For students, coursework, dissertation, reading projects and computational work can supply evidence that publications cannot yet provide. Show how a tool was used rather than listing software generically.
Research-interest or motivation statement
A programme statement explains the applicantâs preparation, the problem, method or group creating the fit, evidence beyond classroom interest, and development the programme would enable. A summer statement emphasises readiness and learning fit; a postdoctoral statement demonstrates independence and immediate contribution.
Research proposal
A fellowship proposal contains the question, knowledge gap, objectives, method, logical stages, risks, outputs, host fit, training and career value. In theory, preliminary derivations, limiting cases, available methods and separation of core from exploratory aims demonstrate feasibility.
The proposal must align with the funderâs evaluation criteria. MSCA explicitly evaluates mobility, training and career development in addition to science; Humboldt examines the candidateâs research trajectory and host environment; a project-funded job may instead demand direct competence with a narrow calculation or code base.
Transcripts and degree evidence
Calls may request official transcripts, grade scales, certified translations, degree certificates or proof of defence. A portal download protected by a password may be unreadable to a committee. Names and degree dates should agree across the passport, transcript, CV and application.
Publications and writing samples
Select work according to instructions, state personal contributions when asked, and supply DOI or preprint identifiers. Never call a submitted revision accepted.
References
Referees should know the applicantâs work closely enough to discuss originality, independence, mathematical or computational ability, reliability and readiness for the proposed move. Some schemes specify the doctoral supervisor, an external expert or a nominated referee. The proposed host may be prohibited from serving as an independent reviewer.
Obtain consent before entering a referee, share the call and dossier, and allow time for confidential upload. Candidate submission may not complete outstanding referee, host or institutional sections.
10. Host contact, nomination and institutional approval
Host contact is mandatory for some fellowships, useful for some visits and inappropriate for centrally matched programmes that instruct candidates not to solicit supervisors.
A host message identifies the applicant and institution, a precise overlap with recent work, the exact scheme and call cycle, and attaches a concise CV and perhaps a one-page outline. It asks whether there is enough fit to discuss an application; it does not ask a stranger to âgive fellowship.â
Before agreeing, both sides should clarify:
- the scientific question and division of intellectual work;
- whether the host is eligible under the scheme;
- office, computing, library or group access;
- who writes which parts and who submits;
- the host institutionâs internal approval and budget process;
- employment, fellowship or visitor status;
- intellectual-property, data and publication expectations; and
- the realistic start window after selection, visa and onboarding.
Nomination changes the workflow: the Japanese host initiates the JSPS host-channel application, while STEP includes home-supervisor material and national endorsement. A Fulbright-Nehru invitation can document affiliation, but USIEF controls selection. Host willingness never equals funding.
11. Timelines without false calendar promises
Because dates move and some calls have capacity limits, use a dependency-based timeline.

Summer programmes recruit well before summer. Candidate-led fellowships require more preparation than many jobs because host and institution co-develop the proposal. Jobs appear year-round with seasonal concentrations; faculty visits also depend on employer approval.
The official callâs time zone and submission mechanism control. âMidnightâ without a stated zone is not safely interpreted as Indian Standard Time. Internal host deadlines can precede the funderâs deadline.
12. What âfundedâ can contain
Financial support is a bundle, not a yes-or-no label.

Official examples show the variation: CERN describes a subsistence allowance and health coverage for summer students; DESY describes payment, hostel and partial travel reimbursement; JSPS lists airfare, maintenance, settling-in and insurance; MSCA pays the beneficiary organisation through several cost categories; the Newton award is costed through the UK host. None should be summarised merely as âfully fundedâ without reading the current entitlements.
13. Visa, insurance, tax and appointment status
Selection and immigration permission are separate events. An offer may be conditional on degree completion, security checks, medical or insurance evidence, host approval and successful visa or residence-permit processing.
The award letter should be used to identify:
- the visa category and official sponsor;
- the permitted start and end dates;
- whether paid work outside the programme is allowed;
- passport-validity and document-translation requirements;
- health, accident and liability insurance obligations;
- tax or social-security treatment;
- dependent eligibility; and
- whether the host can change the start date if processing is delayed.
Do not purchase a non-refundable ticket merely because an application is shortlisted. DESYâs official FAQ, for example, explains that the formal invitation used for a visa follows invitation to the programme and requires insurance documentation. Fulbright-Nehru identifies J-1 visa support; this carries its own programme conditions. A fellowship holder, employee, student and scientific visitor can have different tax, social-security and institutional rights even when doing similar research.
14. Travel support from India
The ANRF International Travel Support scheme is a travel-support mechanism, not a fellowship or overseas job. Its official page supports eligible active Indian researchers presenting an original paper at an international event abroad. It also states a route for qualifying young scientists attending specified training programmes, short schools or workshops. The scheme describes economy airfare, visa and limited registration support under its conditions and gives an application window relative to the event.
Important exclusions and intervals are part of eligibility: postdoctoral placements, internships and informal personal training are not converted into eligible events simply by calling them âresearch visits,â and repeat support is restricted by the scheme. The researcher must read the current ANRF page for age definition, institutional status, event duration, prior-support interval, covered amounts, lead time and post-event documentation.
Conference organisers, home institutions and other funders may have separate travel grants. These cannot be assumed or combined unless their official rules allow it. A scholar should declare other requested or received support accurately.
15. Where theoretical-physics positions are advertised
No portal is complete. A good search combines specialist databases with direct institute pages.
- INSPIRE-HEP Jobs is especially important for high-energy physics, particle theory, gravitation, cosmology and adjacent fields. Its taxonomy and community use make it more precise than a generic jobs engine for HEP.
- EURAXESS Jobs and Opportunities lists research jobs, funding and hosting offers across Europe and beyond. The result type must be checked: an MSCA hosting expression of interest is not an already funded postdoc.
- AcademicJobsOnline Physics carries many postdoctoral and faculty applications across theoretical physics, quantum science, astrophysics and related subjects. The portal manages submissions for institutions; the employerâs advertisement controls terms.
- APS Careers and the APS Physics Jobs board cover academic, laboratory and other physics employment.
- Institute pages remain essential: ICTS, TIFR centres, CERN Careers, DESY, Perimeter, ICTP, universities and national laboratories may publish vacancies or programme calls directly.
Useful alerts combine subject variants: quantum information, quantum many-body, condensed matter theory, mathematical physics, high energy theory, hep-th, hep-ph, gravitation, cosmology, AMO theory, quantum optics and statistical physics. Search also by method when relevant: tensor networks, conformal field theory, lattice methods, quantum simulation, open quantum systems, numerical relativity or effective field theory.
For every portal result, return to the named institution and verify the vacancy. Record the closing time, reference number, contract duration, expected PhD date, referee mechanism and whether the position is funded subject to grant confirmation.
16. Status words in portals and correspondence
Misreading status creates unnecessary anxiety and occasionally false claims on a CV.
- Forthcoming / anticipated: a call is expected but final terms may not exist.
- Open: the system accepts applications; completeness still has to be checked.
- Rolling: review occurs in batches or continuously under stated rules; it does not mean there is no capacity limit.
- Closed: new applications are not accepted for that cycle.
- Submitted: the candidate portion was transmitted; host or referee components may remain pending.
- Eligible: formal conditions passed; no statement of scientific ranking.
- Longlisted / shortlisted: application remains under consideration at a defined stage.
- Reserve / waitlist: no current award, but an offer may follow if capacity changes.
- Nominated / endorsed: an authorised body forwarded or supported the application; the funder has not necessarily selected it.
- Selected / recommended: a positive academic decision that may still require formal approval.
- Conditional offer: award depends on listed requirements such as degree, documents, visa or budget.
- Awarded / offered: formal terms have been issued.
- Accepted: the candidate agreed to those terms.
- Onboarded / appointed: institutional and legal processes have produced the active status.
Similarly, âparticipant,â âvisitor,â âintern,â âstudent,â âfellow,â âassociate,â âpostdoctoral researcherâ and âemployeeâ should be reproduced exactly. Attendance at an ICTP school does not make someone an ICTP Associate; application to PSI Start is not an internship; a host invitation is not a fellowship; and a preprint under review is not a publication accepted by a journal.
17. A mentorâs fit check
Before encouraging a scholar to apply, a supervisor can test the opportunity on seven axes:
- Scientific fit: Is the advertised work recognisably connected to the scholarâs preparation and goals?
- Stage fit: Is the person an enrolled student, PhD applicant, doctoral scholar, recent PhD or established academic under the callâs definition?
- Geographical fit: Do citizenship, residence, home-country employment and mobility history satisfy the rules?
- Host fit: Is a host needed, eligible and genuinely willing to supervise or sponsor?
- Evidence fit: Can the transcript, research work, publications, proposal and references support the claims?
- Financial fit: Are travel, housing, insurance, visa, dependents and pre-arrival costs workable under the actual award?
- Time fit: Can candidate, referees, host and institutions complete their parts before internal and official deadlines?
Examples make the distinctions concrete. An MSc student in quantum information may reasonably examine the Science Academies guide list, ICTS faculty areas and Perimeterâs current school, while CERN or DESY would make sense only if the advertised scientific or computational work matches. An enrolled Indian PhD scholar might fit CERNâs doctoral route if the university integrates the CERN work into the thesis, or ICTP-IAEA STEP if home and host supervision and endorsement requirements are met. A newly defended theorist may search salaried posts immediately while separately developing a Humboldt, MSCA, Newton or JSPS proposal with an eligible host. A faculty member seeking a concentrated visit should examine ICTP Associates, DAAD Research Stays, Humboldtâs experienced-researcher conditions or the current Fulbright-Nehru field list rather than apply to a student internship.
The aim is not to maximise the number of applications. It is to recognise which academic mechanism fits the researcher, assemble truthful evidence and understand the obligations that begin if the application succeeds.
