Quantum Physics Journal Landscape
An objective field map of quantum and theoretical physics journals, their audiences, editorial thresholds, article forms, access models, and changing positions in ranking systems.

The journal landscape in quantum and theoretical physics is not a single ladder. It is a network of partially overlapping communities, each with its own central questions, article forms, standards of evidence and citation culture. A short result with physics-wide consequences, a rigorous theorem, a long quantum-field-theory calculation and a cosmological parameter analysis may all be excellent research, yet they belong to different parts of that network.
This chapter is an awareness map, not a journal-ranking or submission guide. It describes what major journal families publish, who reads them, how their editorial thresholds differ, and why their apparent positions change across databases and years. Scope statements and policy links were checked on 30 June 2026. Journal scopes, article types, access arrangements, fees, indexing and metrics remain time-dependent facts.
Central distinction: journal standing has several dimensionsâbreadth, field authority, selectivity, mathematical rigor, readership, article type, editorial trust and citation position. No one number combines them into a universal measure of quality.
1. What âtop journalâ can mean
The phrase âtop journalâ is common but incomplete. In physics it can refer to any of the following:

These meanings overlap but are not interchangeable. Physical Review Letters and Physical Review X represent broad significance and high selectivity. Physical Review A is a core field journal for atomic, molecular, optical and quantum science. Communications in Mathematical Physics represents a particularly high standard of mathematical physics. JHEP and Physical Review D are central to high-energy theory. Reviews of Modern Physics is associated with authoritative synthesis rather than routine original articles.
Consequently, statements such as âJournal A is above Journal Bâ are usually meaningful only after specifying a subfield, article type, time period and criterion.
Selectivity and scientific quality
Selectivity describes an editorial filter. Broad selective journals reject many sound papers because the results are too specialized for the readership promised by the journal. Specialist journals can apply rigorous peer review while accepting substantial work that matters mainly to one community. A difference in editorial threshold is therefore not a simple division between good and bad research.
Editorial thresholds commonly range from:
- physics-wide landmark significance, where the result is expected to influence several communities;
- exceptional subfield significance, where the result changes an important direction within a major field;
- substantial specialist advance, where experts gain a new theorem, method, prediction or explanation;
- sound field contribution, where the result is original, technically reliable and useful without being transformative; to
- review or synthesis authority, where value comes from organizing and critically evaluating an established body of knowledge.
The threshold also interacts with article form. A letter demands one concentrated message. A full article supports a more complete derivation. A mathematical paper may be organized around formal results and proofs. A review is judged by coverage, critical synthesis and authority rather than by one new calculation.
2. Journal families and article forms
Quantum and theoretical physics journals can be viewed as several broad families.

Common article forms
Letters center on one concise result; regular articles support complete derivations and validation; long-form theory articles give extended development an important role; mathematical communications may be organized around definitions and proofs; and reviews, reports and perspectives synthesize a literature. These forms have different standards and citation patterns.
3. Three illustrative journals with different identities
Annals of Physics, International Journal of Modern Physics A, and The European Physical Journal Plus illustrate why journals cannot be understood as positions on one ladder.

Annals of Physics is associated with a sustained theoretical narrative; International Journal of Modern Physics A with a concentrated particles-and-fields conversation; and EPJ Plus with a wider fundamental, applied and interdisciplinary portfolio. They therefore represent depth-oriented theoretical visibility, specialist field visibility, and broad physics visibility rather than successive prestige levels.
4. Broad, highly selective physics journals
Broad selective journals publish a small subset of results considered important beyond the immediate niche. Their editorial assessment includes accessibility and significance for a wide readership as well as technical validity.

The phrase âbroad interestâ does not mean that every physicist must use the result. It indicates that the conceptual consequence can be understood beyond the narrow group that performed the calculation. In these journals, an advance confined to another parameter set, a routine extension or an isolated formal variation generally lies below the stated editorial identity even when technically correct.
5. Quantum information, quantum science and foundations
Quantum science now contains several partially distinct communities: quantum computation and information, communication, sensing, simulation, thermodynamics, control, AMO and quantum optics, many-body physics, and conceptual foundations. Journals differ in how much of this spectrum they cover.

Physical Review A is an important example of field authority not captured by a simple broad-journal comparison. Its readership and editorial expertise are deeply embedded in AMO and quantum science. PRX Quantum, Quantum Science and Technology and npj Quantum Information emphasize QIST across theoretical, experimental and technological boundaries. Quantum adds a nonprofit community-led model linked closely to the quant-ph preprint culture.
Foundations journals occupy another intellectual space. Their subject matter includes measurement, interpretations, reconstruction of quantum theory, no-go results, quantum logic and the relation between formalism and physical meaning. Conceptual novelty in this literature is normally distinguished from a new name for an existing interpretation by formal consequences, operational distinctions, theorems or a demonstrable resolution of a recognized problem.
6. Mathematical and theoretical physics
Mathematical physics contains a spectrum from theorem-centered work to physically motivated formal methods and long theoretical constructions. Mathematical rigor is necessary in some journals but is not the only criterion: the result must also have sufficient conceptual reach or physical relevance for that journalâs readership.

The distinction between Communications in Mathematical Physics and Journal of Mathematical Physics is not merely a citation rank. The former is associated with an especially high threshold for mathematical-physics significance and proof. The latter covers a wider range of mathematical methods and formulations valuable to theoretical physicists. Journal of Physics A combines mathematical structures with broad theoretical-physics problems, while Annales Henri Poincaré has a strong analytical and geometrical identity. Annals of Physics is less defined by theorem form and more by a fully developed theoretical account.
7. High-energy physics, quantum field theory and particle theory
High-energy physics has a strong arXiv culture and relies heavily on field databases such as INSPIRE-HEP. Preprints provide rapid public circulation, while journals provide editorial selection, peer-review certification and a stable version of record.

JHEP, Physical Review D and European Physical Journal C overlap substantially, but their author communities, editorial histories and distributions across formal theory, phenomenology, experiment and gravity differ. Physics Letters B is distinguished by concise communication. Nuclear Physics B supports a fuller theoretical development and also reaches mathematical-physics and statistical-system topics. International Journal of Modern Physics A serves a broad established community within particles, fields and adjacent gravitation/cosmology.
There is no permanent context-free ordering of these titles. Citation position, category assignment, regional and subfield publication patterns, article volume and access arrangements all contribute to different apparent rankings.
8. Gravitation, cosmology and quantum gravity
Gravity research crosses several disciplinary boundaries. A paper on mathematical relativity, cosmological inference, gravitational waves, QFT in curved spacetime and quantum gravity may share vocabulary while addressing different expert communities.

The same broad topic therefore appears in different forms. JCAP is strongly associated with cosmology and astroparticle questions. Classical and Quantum Gravity centers the gravitational problem itself. Physical Review D integrates gravity with particles, fields and cosmology. General Relativity and Gravitation has a specialist relativity identity. Annales Henri Poincaré represents the rigorous mathematical end of the landscape.
9. Broad, reputable research journals
Broad research journals occupy the space between highly selective physics-wide titles and narrow specialty journals. Their breadth can include interdisciplinary work, methods crossing subfields and sound research without a single obvious specialist home.

âBroadâ is not synonymous with indiscriminate. Each title retains a stated threshold, article culture and readership. Physical Review Research and New Journal of Physics are fully open-access broad venues under society-linked publishing structures. SciPost Physics Core uses a nonprofit community model. EPJ Plus spans a wide range of physics. Annals of Physics is broad within theoretical physics rather than across all experimental and applied physics.
10. Review journals and review-led titles
Review literature is a separate part of the journal system. Reviews are cited frequently because they organize a field, explain terminology, compare approaches and provide an entry point to the primary literature. Their citation patterns help explain why review journals often have high impact factors.

A literature survey summarizes publications. An authoritative review does more: it defines the field, evaluates evidence, reconciles terminology, distinguishes consensus from dispute, compares methods and identifies unresolved questions. Review articles, reports on rapidly developing fields and perspective-like key-issues reviews consequently have different intellectual functions.
The 2026 scope of Reports on Progress in Physics is an important example of why journal identity is time-dependent. Its historic reputation is strongly associated with reviews, but its current article portfolio also includes highly selective original Letters and Research Papers. The journal title alone no longer describes every article type it publishes.
11. Access models and the HEP exception
Access model describes who can read the version of record and how publication is financed. It does not measure scientific quality.

APC size and editorial quality are independent variables. Strong journals exist under subscription, hybrid, gold and diamond arrangements. Similarly, absence of an APC can result from subscription funding, society support, institutional support or a disciplinary consortium rather than from lower editorial standards.
SCOAPÂł
SCOAPÂł is a consortium-based open-access system for high-energy physics. It centrally supports full-journal open access for titles including JHEP, European Physical Journal C, Physics Letters B and Nuclear Physics B, and supports eligible HEP articles in participating hybrid journals. APS describes the SCOAPÂł arrangement for eligible content in Physical Review journals.
This model reflects the distinctive HEP publication culture: wide use of arXiv, international laboratory and library cooperation, and a literature concentrated in a recognizable journal set. SCOAPÂł coverage is policy- and article-dependent, so its presence is an access fact rather than a journal-quality label.
Preprints and journal versions
An arXiv preprint provides rapid public dissemination and a dated scholarly record. It is not identical to journal peer-review certification. The accepted manuscript and the publisherâs version of record are later stages with different editorial and legal status. Physics communities often read all three, particularly in HEP, quantum information and mathematical physics.
12. Why rankings and quartiles vary
Journal rankings are produced by defined databases and formulas rather than discovered as natural properties of journals. Variation arises from several sources.
Different databases
Web of Science, Scopus and Google Scholar cover different sets of documents and citations. SCImago uses Scopus-derived data but applies its own SJR method. A journalâs position can therefore change when the underlying universe of journals changes.
Different categories
A journal may appear in more than one subject category. EPJ Plus, a broad physics journal, is compared with a different peer set from a specialist mathematical-physics or HEP title. The same journal can occupy different quartiles in different categories during the same year.
Different time windows and formulas
Journal Impact Factor uses a short citation window. CiteScore uses a longer window and a different document treatment. SJR weights citations by the prestige network of citing journals. SNIP attempts field normalization. Journal h-index is cumulative and strongly affected by age and publication volume. None of these measures the same construct.
Different citation cultures
Fast-moving experimental or technology fields can accumulate citations quickly. Mathematical physics and some areas of formal theory may develop influence over longer periods. Large collaborations, review articles, data releases and community software also create citation patterns unlike those of single-author theorem papers.
Journal size, age and article mix
Older, larger journals usually have higher cumulative h-indices. Review-rich journals often have high short-window citation averages. A journal publishing many articles may have broad citation reach but a different average from a small selective journal. A small number of exceptionally cited papers can pull an average upward while most papers remain near or below the median.
Annual movement
Quartiles are relative bins. A journal can move even when its own citation performance changes little because other journals enter the category, leave it or change rank. Database policy and category reassignment can also produce movement unrelated to a sudden change in editorial quality.
For these reasons, a complete quartile statement includes the database, metric, data year and category. Current JCR coverage belongs to the Web of Science Master Journal List and Journal Citation Reports; current Scopus coverage and CiteScore context belong to Scopus Sources. A number copied without this context is not a reproducible bibliometric claim.
DORA further distinguishes journal-level citation behaviour from the quality of an individual article or researcher. Journal averages describe a publication venue; they do not predict the correctness, originality or future influence of every paper inside it.

The map is multidimensional. Breadth, selectivity, rigor, specialist centrality, article length, access and citation position describe different aspects of the publication system. A sophisticated understanding preserves those differences instead of collapsing them into a single ranking.
